Stefan Christmann (born October 6, 1983 in Koblenz ) is a German nature photographer and filmmaker .

Life

Stefan Christmann has been taking photographs since his youth. He specialized in nature and wildlife photography, taking photos in areas such as Yellowstone National Park . In 2005 he was the first international student to receive a grant from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) . Christmann has worked in the field of camera, display and hardware development.

In 2012 Christmann spent 14 months as a geophysicist at the German research station Neumayer 3 in Antarctica . As one of about 350 Antarctic winterers in German polar research, he photographed the nature of the Antarctic during the southern polar winter.

In 2017 Christmann again traveled to Antarctica as an expedition photographer and camera assistant, as part of a film crew commissioned by the BBC to film the life of the emperor penguins in Atka Bay . Large parts of the footage were published in the BBC nature documentary BBC Dynasties at the end of 2018 (in German under the title Wilde Dynastien ). The film crew received special media attention because they were rescued from trapped penguins by shoveling an ice ramp, which the birds used to return to the colony.

Christmann celebrated his greatest success so far in a photography competition in 2019 when he won the Wildlife Photographer Portfolio Award with a selection of emperor penguin photographs from the renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year (advertised by the Natural History Museum in London ). From a total of over 48,000 image submissions, the jury selected his portfolio as the best complete work in nature photography.
