Stefan Esser (born April 25, 1966 in Leverkusen ) is a German composer , musician and teacher .

Life

After obtaining the general university entrance qualification in 1985 with subsequent community service, Stefan Esser began studying special education with the subject of music at the University of Cologne in 1988 . During his studies, he obtained degrees in choir and orchestra conducting as well as in piano and singing.

In 1985 he made his first appearance as a composer and pianist . In 1986 and 1987 he played several concerts in Spain with the cellist Michael Schlechtriem.

Almost all of the compositions have been performed in Leverkusen and the surrounding area, but also abroad, and several have appeared in print or on CD. Esser's compositional style is characterized by the recourse to traditional form structures, the detailed processing of themes, the use of contrapuntal techniques and the use of free-tonal harmony.

Esser works full-time as the vice-principal at the Hugo-Kükelhaus-Schule, a special needs school with a special focus on intellectual development in the city of Leverkusen.

Music for children

Through his full-time activity as a special needs teacher, Esser is committed to the musical education of children. Since 2002 he has been composing children's singing games and setting children's stories and fairy tales to music. He works closely with the Duo Pianoworte, which premiered his compositions Where the wild guys live , The emperor's new clothes , animal stories based on Wilhelm Busch and two pranks from the bourgeoisie .

The inclusive music project Mein Leverkusen celebrated great success with the press and the public in 2013 and was released on CD in 2016.

Awards

In 2013 Esser received the Kurt Lorenz Prize from the Friends of the Kurt Lorenz Prize eV for his musical work and commitment in Leverkusen.

In 2014/15 Esser took part in the first Diabelli competition . Within the competition, a piano piece was to be composed, which was to arise from the variation of a Morse code that resulted in the modern Greek word "Irini" (peace). His 8-minute work would be nominated for the finale on April 18, 2015 in Munich and premiered by the pianist Tommaso Farinetti.

Young Theater Leverkusen

The young theater Leverkusen is an artistic training company. Young people aged 17 and over can gain insights into acting, directing and other theater-related professions in an ensemble. Stefan Esser has been committed to the development and continued existence of the Junge Theater since it was founded in 1998 and is on the board of the association.
