Stefan Kürten

Stefan Kürten (* 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German manager and since 2001 Director of Sport & Business Strategy of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Life

Kürten is a fully qualified lawyer , studied at universities in Germany, Great Britain and Latin America and was with ZDF from 1989 to 2001 . Initially he was program officer for the editor-in-chief Klaus Bresser until 1992 and then took over the management of the international program coordination department . In 1998 he moved to the main sports department as head of the central department and deputy chief editor. In addition, he was ARD / ZDF team manager at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano in 1998 and ZDF team manager at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 . At the EBU he was ZDF representative from 1998 to 2001 President of the EBU Sports Group. Kürten was previously deputy head of ZDF's main sports department and responsible for program rights, personnel and marketing. At the EBU he was initially responsible for news and sports operations as well as for sports rights as "Director of Eurovision Operations" since 2001. After a restructuring, his function as "Director Sports & Business" has been redesigned since 2009.

When choosing a new WDR manager to succeed Monika Piel , Kürten was one of three shortlisted candidates.

He is married to Susanne Biedenkopf-Kürten , the journalist and head of the ZDF main editorial office for economics, law, service, social affairs and the environment ; the couple has two children. Kürten is the son-in-law of Kurt Biedenkopf .
