Stefanie Gräfe (2017)

Stefanie Gräfe (* 1979 ) is a German chemist .

From 1998 Gräfe studied chemistry at the University of Würzburg with a diploma in 2003 and a doctorate with Volker Engel in 2005 (dissertation: Laser-Control of Molecular Dynamics ). As a post-doctoral student she was at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences in Ottawa with Misha Ivanov and from 2008 to 2011 at the TU Vienna with Joachim Burgdörfer. In 2009 she was a substitute professor in Jena. Then she did research again at the TU Vienna. In 2013 she became Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Her research focuses on the interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with atoms and molecules.

In 2018 she received the ERC Consoldiator Grant of the European Research Council, worth 1.9 million euros . With this she wants to finance a QUEM-CHEM project (time- and space-resolved ultrafast dynamics in molecule-plasmon hybrid systems). A system of molecules on metallic nanoparticles is irradiated with a laser. This triggers plasmon excitations (electronic excitations) in the metal and reactions (plasmon catalysis) with the molecule. Her group mainly studies theoretical models and computer simulations of the processes, which are then to be checked in Volker Deckert's group. Possible applications would be sensors for molecules.
