Stefano Bianchini (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefano Bianchini (* 1970 ) is an Italian mathematician.

Bianchini received his doctorate in 2000 from SISSA (Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati) in Trieste with Alberto Bressan ( On Singular Approximations to Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws ). He is at the Istituto per le Applicazioni del Calcolo M. Picone (IAC) in Rome.

He deals with the theory of partial differential equations , especially hyperbolic conservation laws. With his teacher Bressan he was able to solve the long open problem of the stability and convergence of approximate solutions of vanishing viscosity for one-dimensional nonlinear hyperbolic systems. Bianchini introduced new concepts in which he represented the solutions locally as superpositions of advancing waves with the help of the center manifold theory.

In 2004 he received the EMS Prize and was invited speaker at the 4th European Congress of Mathematicians ( Singular approximation to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension ).
