Stone aviaduct

The Steinaviadukt is a railway viaduct over the Steina on the district boundary Waldshut-Tiengen and Unterlauchringen of the Hochrheinbahn . The viaduct was planned together with the section of the Hochrheinbahn from Waldshut to Konstanz via Schaffhausen from 1856 under Robert Gerwig and built by 1862. The viaduct is the only pointed arch railway bridge in Germany.

history

The foundations are on the bank or in the river bed of the Steina, which often dries up due to seepage, on a shell limestone formation that runs east-west here in a meandering gorge. The viaduct is single-track in standard gauge. The two-lane expansion of the line was already planned. The renegotiations with Schaffhausen were concluded with a contract on December 30, 1858 and the ceremonial opening of the entire route took place on June 13, 1863. On December 18, 1862, the first test drive had already been made. The visit of the Grand Duke Friedrich I was also planned for the opening : His Royal Highness, the Grand Duke will deign to attend the procession to Constanz from Waldshut. (...) Between Thiengen and Oberlauchringen, a 10-minute stop to visit the railway bridge over the Steinach. (...)
