history

During the First World War , in the course of the mountain war in June 1915, the summit ridge of the Frischenkofel was captured by Italian units, whereby the valley town of Kötschach-Mauthen could be under fire. On June 24th, the local gendarmerie post commander Simon Steinberger climbed with five other gendarmes unsecured and in full equipment a channel in the east wall, which the Italians had not monitored due to their difficulties, and overpowered them on the early morning of June 25th Italian position at the east summit. The remaining Italians, ignorant of the strength of their opponents, withdrew to the western summit and from there could no longer threaten Kötschach-Mauthen.

Steinberger and his gendarmes were able to hold out for five days and nights, while pioneers who had moved up provided the difficult wall passages of the gutter with safety ropes and thus reinforcements were able to climb up to the east summit. On July 18, 1915, Steinberger and around 30 other men were able to recapture the western summit at short notice. Steinberger was one of the first to be awarded the gold medal for bravery for his achievements .

The Steinbergerweg was rebuilt in the summer of 1965 by soldiers of the 7th Mountain Brigade of the Federal Army , making it accessible for mountaineers. In the 1980s the old positions, paths and tunnels from the World War were declared the Plöckenpass open-air museum and extensively restored by Walther Schaumann and his friends of the Dolomites .

1987 was Cello tunnel opened as ferrata on the cello shoulder, could be achieved where from the Steinbergerweg after a short walk to the northwest. From then on, the combination of tunnel and Steinbergerweg was a popular and eventful climb to the summit area of the Frischenkofel.

Due to the establishment of the safe, sporty and from the point of view more demanding via ferrata path without borders from the Cellon shoulder over the southeast ridge to the summit ridge, the grassy and brittle Steinbergerweg lost its importance from 1995 onwards. In 2009, the Oberst Gressel via ferrata east of the Cellon tunnel was opened and allowed a more sporty and panoramic climb to the Cellon shoulder.
