Sparmann quarry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sparmann quarry is a disused quarry and is now a body of water in the Kamenz urban area . At around seventy meters, the current lake is the second deepest body of water in Saxony and one of the deepest in Germany. It is about two hundred meters long and about 170 meters wide. The surrounding rock walls reach a height of about ten meters. Due to its depth, the former quarry is an ideal diving area .

The quarry was named after the operator of the quarry Carl Sparmann. His company "Carl Sparmann & Co. GmbH" mined a coarse-grained, porphyry textured granodiorite here from 1940 to 1959 . The company was nationalized in 1959 and operated under the name "VEB (K) Granit- und Grünsteinwerke Kamenz / Sachsen". The trading name of the rock was granite. The biotite granodiorite mined in the quarry is light gray-white in color with black indentations. The main components of the rock are whitish feldspar , gray quartz and black, finely flaked biotite .
