The Weiner Esch quarry is a former quarry south of the town of Ochtrup , Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is a registered paleontological ground monument and protected geotope because of its fossil finds .

The limestone exposed there is described as sandy and banky and is yellow-brown in color. In the past, this information gave its name to the Weiner strata, which are now part of the Burgsteinfurt formation. The sediments emerged 84 mya in the Upper Cretaceous from a rather shallow sea and here reach a thickness of 8.5 m. Part of it is interspersed with rubble. Belemnites and mollusks are mentioned as frequently occurring fossils , but what is special about the Weiner Esch quarry is the large number of shark and ray teeth. Scientists at the Ruhr Museum in Essen have been working on the site more closely for some time .
