The Steiner Tor is a preserved city gate of the city of Krems an der Donau and is considered the city's landmark. In today's urban area, there are two more city gates in the Stein an der Donau district: the Kremser Tor and the Linzer Tor.

Until the last third of the 19th century, the city of Krems was surrounded by a wall. This was systematically razed, with three city gates being demolished. For the 700th anniversary of the city charter , which took place in 2005, the Steiner Tor was restored as true to the original as possible.

Appearance

Outside the portal is flanked left and right by satellite towers, which, like the lower storey of the gate, date from the late Middle Ages. To the right of the archway is a small coat of arms stone. It carries the motto of Emperor Friedrich III. , the AEIOU and the year 1480 in Roman numerals. This date probably means the restoration of the fortifications, which had become necessary after the destruction by Hungarian troops in 1477.

The tower construction dates back much recently, it is baroque and was built in the reign of Maria Theresa, a chronogram gives disbanded the year 1756. At the center we find the coat of arms of the Habsburg monarchy at the time of Maria Theresa , the double eagle with the letter MT right next to it, the red-white-red shield and the Styrian panther formed the city's coat of arms from 1453–1463. Emperor Friedrich III. however, in 1463 the coat of arms "improved" and created the city symbol that is still valid today: Roman-German double-headed eagle crowned with the imperial crown in black and gold.

Surroundings

Outside the Steiner Tor, the area was originally endangered by Danube floods. The demolition of the city walls, which at the same time formed the flood protection, was made possible by regulating the current. A memorial stone attached to the inner side of the Steiner Tor commemorates such a catastrophe when an ice rush caused a great flood in 1573.

The shopping center of the same name is located in the immediate vicinity of Steiner Tor.
