Österreichische Baudenkmäler is an Austrian series of definitive stamps that appeared from 1957 to 1970. It comprises 34 stamps. Each brand shows an Austrian building.

The designs of the brands come from the artists Adalbert Pilch , Hans Strohofer and Otto Zeiller ; the engravings of the values 1 Schilling (Basilica of Mariazell) and 10 Schilling by Georg Wimmer and the engraving of the 20 Schilling stamp by Rudolf Toth.

To print the series, the printing processes intaglio printing , letterpress printing , offset printing ( Austrian State Printing House ) and gravure printing (Harrison & Sons Ltd. London) were used.

Image format

The stamps were produced in four different image formats; the information relates to width times height:

  • Values from 20 groschen to 8 shillings: 20.5 × 24.5 mm
  • The value of 10 shillings: 21.5 × 27.5 mm
  • The value of 20 shillings: 28 × 37 mm
  • Stamps from postage stamps: 17.5 × 20.5 mm

perforation

For the perforation of brands was Kammzähnung used. There are three different tooth dimensions: K 14, K 14: 13.75 and K 14:15.

particularities

The 1 Schilling postage stamp (Mariazell Basilica) was produced using four different printing processes:

  • From June 22, 1957: intaglio printing
  • From October 25, 1957: Book printing
  • From January 19, 1957: offset printing (like the other values)
  • Stamp from postage stamps from February 1, 1960: Raster gravure

This series is particularly popular with special collectors who distinguish the many variations (printing differences, plate defects, color differences, etc.).

Market value

Since this series was valid for postage and in use until the currency changeover to the euro in 2002, the market supply is high.

In mint condition, the values of 2 shillings (Gnadenkirche von Christkindl), 10 shillings (Heidenreichstein Castle) and 20 shillings (Melk Abbey) are the most popular. When stamped, around 1000 stamps are available at online auctions for one euro, for example, which corresponds to a price of 0.1 euro cents per stamp.

The complete series with 34 values is neatly canceled for 5 euros, mint never hinged for 2 euros (as of 2006). Individual, beautifully canceled stamps (with round stamps and clearly legible date and place information) are traded much higher. Special collectors who distinguish the many variations (printing differences, plate defects, color differences, etc.) are prepared to pay higher sums for this.

The prices given here are based on experience and cannot be compared with the catalog prices, which are usually much higher. However, catalog prices are suitable for comparing stamps with one another.

Edition numbers

The edition numbers of the stamps are not known; the most common pieces are the values of 50 Groschen, 1 Schilling (Basilica of Mariazell), 1.50 Schilling and 2 Schilling (Lindwurmbrunnen in Klagenfurt), as these denominations covered postage rates that were frequently used for a long time.

One can assume that some of these values have a circulation of several hundred million pieces. The rarest values in this series are 3.40 shillings, 6.40 shillings and 20 shillings.
