Steinerhaus (Schänis)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Steinerhaus is a listed building in the St. Gallen community of Schänis .

It is considered the headquarters of the local Steiner family and is located at the northern exit of the village. The Gable House is traufständig the street and was built in its present form in the year 1711th

The house has a five-axis facade, with only the ground floor being solidly bricked, while the two residential floors above and the gable front are likely to be knitted. In any case, the wooden frames of the windows permit this conclusion. In the middle of the south front there is a wide sandstone portal, above which there is a lying skylight with an iron rococo grille . There is a sandstone relief above this grid. This shows the alliance coat of arms Steiner-Gmür with the inscription “Joh. Franciscus Steiner - M. Philippina Gmür ”. The ones mentioned are the regional cap master Johann Franziskus Steiner and the daughter of the regional judge Johannes Gmür († 1775). The sandstone relief is likely to have originated from a reworked late Gothic relief around 1770 . The southern facade has purlin projections with figural carvings. The four advances of the central purlins have dragon heads with grimaces. The two ankle purlins each show a deer's head, the flying triangles on top are designed as human twin bodies.
