Stone cross

Steinernes Kreuz is the common name for a small and rather inconspicuous memorial very close to the Jakobsweg on the north bank of the Remscheid Eschbachtalsperre , where the old military route from Cologne to Dortmund once passed and is located on the footpath to the Birgden I court.

It bears the following, already weathered inscription: "Request for the soul of Mr. Josef Weizels (or: Waizels), whose attack this cross is set, in memory of October 17th in the year of the Lord 1554." Some researchers also represent the Believes that it must be the year 1509.

According to tradition, a money messenger with the above name is said to have been attacked and killed at this point. Dying, he had gone flying Fieldfares shouted, they may avenge him. A few kilometers further in Bergisch Born , the two robbers ate fried field thrushes, also known as " Krammetsvögel " in the Bergisches Land , and said while serving: "They won't betray us." However, the landlord overheard the conversation and passed the information on the act continues.

Because of this lack of caution, both criminals were caught, sentenced in Cologne and hanged there.

In the past, the “Steinern-Kreuzer-Kermße” (popularly known as “Stienernen-Krützer-Kermße”) was held here in the morning of Whit Monday. Historians suspect that it developed from a memorial service for Josef Weizel, who died here. The tradition of the fair was later continued in Bergisch Born . Until 2012, the Krammetsvogelkirmes took place here on the last weekend in September.

The memorial stands a little off the road, but is frequented by passers-by. The low wooden fence surrounding it is now badly damaged.
