The Bronze Age stone box Cnoc Sgadain in Acharole in Caithness in Scotland was found in 1904 by Robert Sutherland, the gravel from a pit near the two remaining standing stones of a stone circle dug to the streets on Acharole Hill mend.

He discovered a stone box that contained the skeletal remains of a young man who was buried with a bell-shaped goblet. The skull was described as "very round" and the individual had a "wide face," features that are considered common among the cup people . The mug was decorated at intervals with zones that formed vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines and criss-cross and zigzag patterns . The cup broke due to improper handling, has been reassembled and is in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh . The skeletal material was analyzed by Francis Tress Barry, (1825-1907) and is in the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow . The box and the menhirs are best known for the watercolor painting Cairn at Acharole by John Nicolson (1891–1951), a local artist.

Another cup grave was found southwest of Acharole Hill, in Achavanich, almost 85 years later. A young woman was buried here with a beaker, three pieces of flint and a beef shoulder bone. Similar to Acharole, the cup was behind the head, but in contrast, the person buried here - a woman - was on her right side with her head facing west and southeast. This is also similar to other women's burials in the bell-cup culture . A research project has been launched to study the life and death of this individual known as the Achavanich Beaker Burial Project.
