Pair of stones from Coolcoulaghta
The pair of stones from Coolcoulaghta are part of a row of stones in a field in the townland of Coolcoulaghta ( Irish Cuar Chuallachta ), about 3.2 km southwest of Durrus near Bantry in County Cork in Ireland .
The menhirs are about 1.8 m tall. A third stone originally stood 63 m southwest of the couple; this has been removed. The two stones were also removed in 1980 but were re-erected by the Public Works Office in 1983 following a local protest, using a plan drawn up by archaeologists from the Ordnance Survey in 1977 .
The stones may come from the Bronze Age . They are aligned 400 m to the west on the stone circle of Dunbeacon . The purpose of menhirs ( English standing stones ) is unclear; they could have served as boundary markers, burial sites, ritual or ceremonial sites, or astrological alignments.
