Stone gate (Malchin)

The stone gate

The stone gate in Malchin is one of the four gates of the fortifications that surrounded the city of Malchin . The current building is a replica of the original two-story brick building with a fieldstone base and pent roof from the 14th century. It was built as a double gate and the lower interior of the entrance gate served as a prison until the 19th century. Partial demolition began later. In 1893 the stone gate was cleared for demolition and sold. The Malchiner court decoration painter Fritz Greve campaigned vehemently for the preservation of the building. The Mecklenburg Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. expressed his will to have the gate restored. The gate was then built in neo-Gothic style based on the original by October 1894 and handed over to the magistrate as the property of the city of Malchin on December 15. Today the stone gate is one of the most important sights of the city.
