Steipe in Trier

The Steipe is a Gothic building on the main market in Trier .

history

The Steipe was built around 1430 as a festival and reception building for the citizenship at the confluence of Fleischstrasse and Dietrichstrasse in the main market and was largely rebuilt between 1481 and 1483. Until the 18th century the building was the town hall. Restored in the 1930s, the house was restored and has been used for gastronomic purposes ever since. During the Second World War, on December 21, 1944, the Steipe was completely destroyed. After the rubble was removed, the site became the terrace of a café. From May 1968 to July 1970 the building complex was rebuilt true to the original. The reconstruction was preceded by a broad discussion in which the construction of a modern building on the site of the destroyed original was also debated. The desire of the citizens to get the historical landmark back and the doubts about the compatibility of a modern building in the cityscape finally led to the reconstruction , together with the Steipe the neighboring baroque Red House was also restored. Today the Steipe houses a restaurant in the Ratskeller, a café on the ground floor and a toy museum on the upper floors .

The building has four floors and is crowned with a crenellated wreath and a steep hipped roof. On the ground floor there are open pointed arcades, the columns of which ( Trierisch : "Steipen" = supports) gave the building its name. Between these arcades are statues of Trier's patron saint (from left) James the Elder , Helena , Peter and Paul . Two more statues are on the first floor level, two knights in full armor. The symbolic content of these figures is characteristic of the building: while the figure on the left, facing the “Bürgererkirche” St. Gangolf , has its visor open to the church, the figure on the right, facing the cathedral , has its visor closed. The sculptures are copies, the original figures (which were removed before the war was destroyed) are in the Simeonstift Trier city museum . The color scheme of the rebuilt building is based on the original, as detailed investigations were carried out during a restoration shortly before the war. A number of later changes were omitted during the reconstruction in favor of the (not always absolutely certain) original state. The interiors have been redistributed according to modern use.

In the north-west of the building is a square stair tower, the only part of the Steipe that was not destroyed in the Second World War.
