The Styrian Heimatwerk is a cultural institution in Graz , Styria . It is the oldest Heimatwerk in Austria and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Austrian Heimatwerke since 1952. The Heimatwerk has dedicated itself to maintaining and passing on Styrian customs since it was founded. The main focus here is on Styrian women's costumes , in whose continuation and contemporary implementation the Heimatwerk, as the commissioned body of the State of Styria, is significantly involved.

history

The foundation stone for the establishment of a Heimatwerk in Styria was laid very early: planned in 1915 and implemented in 1917, the Heimatwerk was run as a folklore sales point in the Styrian Folklore Museum in Graz . Viktor Geramb , who is to be named here as the initiator, essential thought giver and designer, pursued concrete goals: With the establishment he saw the idea of folk education [...] of imitations of originals of Styrian folk art existing in the museum [...] realized, and had corresponding handicrafts produced and spread. At the same time, the production of these products should promote rural house trade and small businesses.

Renaming and reopening

On July 7th, 1934 Viktor Geramb was finally able to open his own, enlarged sales area under the name "Steirisches Heimatwerk" in the "Stöckl", an outbuilding of the folklore museum. It was to become a model for all other Heimatwerke in Austria and laid the foundation stone for the one founded in 1948 Heimatwerk in Salzburg .

Branch (s) in Kapfenberg

As early as 1952, the second Styrian Heimatwerk branch was founded in Kapfenberg on Koloman-Wallisch-Platz. Another followed in 1976 in Kapfenberg. In 1980/81 these two branches, which are very close together, were combined, rebuilt and reopened.

Spatial changes in Graz

Due to the shortage of space in the “Stöckl” of the folklore museum and the desire for a branch in the Graz pedestrian zone, business was started in 1976 at Sackstrasse 16 and held for 10 years before moving to Herrengasse 10 in 1986. In the years 1978/79, a new, larger accommodation for the Styrian Heimatwerk was found in Paulustorgasse 4 and thus in the vicinity of the Folklore Museum and the founding location in "Stöckl" was finally closed.

Incorporation into Volkskultur Steiermark GmbH

Since July 2008, both business premises are again housed in a common building. With the founding of Volkskultur Steiermark GmbH and the incorporation of the Heimatwerk into the company, the two Graz branches moved to premises specially adapted for the Heimatwerk at Sporgasse 23. Customers now have access to the traditional costume area and Styrian handicrafts on two levels. The tailoring of the Heimatwerk, in which all of the traditional costumes sold in the Heimatwerk are handcrafted, was also located in the same building to ensure short production routes.

Froschgoscherl & smock sheet

With "Froschgoscherl & Kittelblech - The worksheets of women's costumes in Styrian Heimatwerk" , Volkskultur Steiermark GmbH published a collection of all Styrian everyday, Sunday, hand-woven and festival costumes that were known up to that point in spring 2010, supplemented by specialist articles on the history of their origins. As early as December of the same year, a second, expanded edition was necessary because the first edition was out of print shortly after it was published. The second edition comprises a total of 269 Styrian women's costumes and has been expanded to include a "Trachtenlandkarte der Stiermark".
