Gövelek stele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gövelek stele is a rectangular stele with a semicircular end. It was found in 2002 at Gövelek Gölü . It comes from the Urartian king Rusa Erimenaḫi .

content

The stele mentions the construction of a reservoir that irrigated the "land in front of Mount Qilbani" (perhaps the Zimzim Dağ ). This can be the Göveleksee, the Keşiş Gölü or the reservoirs of Köşebaşı , Kurubaşı and Sihke .

meaning

The stele is of crucial importance for the interpretation of the later history of the Urartian Empire , as it shows that the decline assumed after the reign of Rusa II was not as drastic as previously claimed. Altan Çilingiroğlu argued on the basis of the inscription for an earlier dating of Rusa Eremenaḫi, but also accepted without convincing archaeological evidence of a statement Skytheneinfalles would reconsider.
