Stella Maris Church (Sliema)
The parish church Stella Maris ( Maltese Knisja tal-Verġni Marija Kewkba Tal-Baħar , English Stella Maris Parish Church ) is a parish church at Triq il-Kbira in Sliema , Malta . It is registered in the National Inventory of Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands under number 19.
history
In the middle of the 19th century, the population of Sliema grew so rapidly that the small chapel previously used was no longer sufficient for the number of residents. The architect Giuseppe Bonavia therefore designed a new church. Construction began in 1853 and was completed a short time later. In the 1870s, the church was enlarged under the direction of the architect Bonavia, with two side aisles, a sacristy and an eastern extension added and a dome added. In 1878, Stella Maris was replaced as a separate parish by Birkirkara and received the first parish in Sliema. In 1909, the church was changed again and got a new facade, which - even if the architect had already died - goes back to the designs of Bonavia.
