Sten G. Halfvarson
Sten G. Halfvarson (born February 11, 1915 in Wilkinsburg , † September 1, 2003 ) was an American music teacher and choir director.
The son of Swedish immigrants came to Chicago with his family in 1929 and attended Senn High School there . He was discovered by Noble Cain , who promoted him and recorded him in his Chicago A Cappella Choir . He sang with the choir from 1929 to 1936 at concerts, on the radio and on concert tours. After attending North Park College , he studied music education at Northwestern University until 1939 . 1937-38 he taught in Menominee, Michigan, then went to Aurora, where he taught at West High School until 1979 . From 1942 to 1945 he served in the US Air Force.
In 1946 Halfvarson returned to Aurora and married the choir director Lucille Robertson , with whom he had four children and with whom he worked on various choral projects. From 1952 to 1994 he was music director of the New England Congregational Church . From 1954 to 1966 he was a board member of the Illinois Music Education Association . In 1960 he founded the Aurora Festival Chorus , with which he performed major choral works such as Brahms ' Requiem , Mendelssohn's Elias and Haydn's Creation every year.
In 1968 he conducted a performance of the Illinois All-State Choir at the World Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) in Dijon. Between 1979 and 1993, he and his wife taught a music proficiency program in Chicago. 2000 were awarded an honorary doctorate from Aurora University . During his teaching activity Halfvarson composed pieces for his choirs. In 2002 these works were published in print.
