The Stench Point is a prominent headland , which marks the western foothills of Zavodovski Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands . It is south of Acrid Point .
British Discovery Investigations scientists on the RRS Discovery II named the Cape West Bluff in 1930 . In order to avoid duplication of names, this was changed to the form common today, which has been established by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee since 1971 . The name refers to the stench ( English stench ) emanating from volcanic gases that escape on the west side of the island.
