The Stennabrücke is a concrete frame bridge that connects the districts of Flims Dorf and Flims Waldhaus. When it was opened to traffic in July 1959, with a length of 113 meters and a height of 30 meters above the water level, it was the largest road bridge in the canton of Graubünden. Until the opening of the Flims bypass in 2007, it served to develop the entire Surselva .

history

Stenna-Tobel: The old bridge, behind it the old parking garage and to the right of it the new bridge from 1959

The Stennaschlucht separates the districts of Flims Dorf and Flims Waldhaus. The old bridge in the ravine and its access roads, which were built in the 19th century when the commercial road to the Surselva was built, did not meet the demands of traffic in the 1950s.

The Stennabrücke is a frame bridge made of concrete and connects the districts of Flims Dorf and Flims Waldhaus. After three unrealized bridge projects from 1906 onwards, the falsework collapsed on July 27, 1958 at the fourth attempt. When the completed bridge was opened to traffic in July 1959, it was 113 meters long and 30 meters above the water level, making it the largest road bridge in the canton of Graubünden. The carriageway is 6 meters wide, the sidewalks 1.50 and 2 meters. Until 2007 and the opening of the Flims bypass in a tunnel, the Stennabrücke served to develop the entire Surselva with Hauptstrasse 19 .

Starting with the construction of the stenna center

In 2015, construction work on the new Stenna center began with the construction of part of the new car park between the bridge and the old car park. In the “Stenna Flims” project, a building complex was added to the side of the bridge. The previous car bridge was only recognizable as a bridge to the east after construction was completed. The western side of the bridge was occupied by a three-story long building along its entire length. In the area of the old car park of the mountain railways behind it, three more residential buildings were built at the bridge. In winter, a ski slope opens between these houses and thus at the level of the bridge. From then on, the large space below this square served as a shop, cinema and parking garage. The building permit from July 24, 2012 was granted in 2013, and construction work began that same year.

The client for the project by architects Baumschlager Eberle from St. Gallen was the Credit Suisse investment foundation with Senn Resources AG. The construction volume was 267 390 m 3 , the usable area 60 162 m 2 . The car park offers around 1300 parking spaces, 800 of which are for the mountain railways. The opening took place in December 2018.

As part of the construction work, the Stennabrücke was completely renewed. The sidewalks were removed and rebuilt. The supports at the bridge ends were reinforced. The deck slab was removed down to the reinforcement and rebuilt.
