Stepan Gavrilowitsch Glotow
Stepan Gavrilovich Glotov ( Russian Степан Гаврилович Глотов , scientific transliteration Stephan Gavrilovic Glotov * 1729 Russian Empire ; † April 23 . Jul / 4. May 1769 greg. On Unimak ) was a Russian fur trader and explorer of the Bering Strait and coastal Alaska .
Life
From 1746 Glotow is demonstrably employed in the Bering Strait as a fur trader, u. a. on behalf of the merchant Fyodor Cholodilow. From 1758 he undertook three research trips to explore Alaska in the tradition of Vitus Bering . In 1763, Glotow was the first European on the island of Kodiak , which he also gave his name to. On his last trip he died of scurvy .
