Stephanie Ortwig (later Stephanie Probst , born January 28, 1973 in Remscheid ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the Federal Republic of Germany until 1990 .

Stephanie Ortwig was the daughter of the tenant of the swimming pool restaurant in Remscheid-Lennep and was already able to swim at the age of three. During her sporting career she competed for SG Remscheid .

At the German Championships in 1988 she won three titles on the routes from 200 meters freestyle to 800 meters freestyle, a week later she won the European Junior Championships over 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle, swimming over 200 meters with a 1: 59.92 as the first German female swimmer on a 50-meter lane under two minutes. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, she only missed the A final over the 800-meter course. In the 200 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle and with the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, she took seventh place.

In 1989 and 1990 Stephanie Ortwig won the championship titles over 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle. After numerous world-class swimmers intensified the competition at German championships from October 1990 when the GDR joined the Federal Republic of Germany , Ortwig no longer won any championship titles. In January 1991 at the World Championships in Perth , all German swimmers started in a team for the first time since 1964. In the 4 x 200 meter relay, three swimmers, Kerstin Kielgaß , Manuela Stellmach and Dagmar Hase , who competed for the GDR until 1990 , swam . In the final of the World Championships, Stephanie Ortwig was the final swimmer, who swam the German relay to the title before the relay from the Netherlands and Denmark.
