Stephen Akinmurele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Oladimeji K. Akinmurele (born March 16, 1978August 28, 1999 in Manchester ) was a British alleged serial killer of Nigerian origin who was charged with the murder of five elderly people between 1995 and 1998. Akinmurele confessed to a series of murders, but committed suicide before the trial against him began. Police believe he could also have been responsible for two other murders.

Victim

All of the victims in this case were elderly. The lead investigator in the case noted that Akinmurele had a "pathological hatred" of old people. Because he selected elderly people who lived in quiet suburban streets as victims, he was called the "cul-de-sac killer". Akinmurele, of Nigerian descent, had a history of mental illness and committed crimes against the elderly by the age of 11. He claimed that he got a "kick" from murdering old people.

Eric Boardman, one of the victims, received a posthumous award for his courage to defend himself and his wife against Akinmurele, leaving Akinmurele so much evidence, including fingerprints, on the scene for the police to catch him.
