Stephen Ward is a musical with a book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton , with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber . The musical is based on the Profumo affair of 1963, in which the British Secretary of War John Profumo and the celebrity Stephen Ward were involved. The musical premiered in London's West End at the Aldwych Theater in December 2013. According to press reports, the musical was not very successful and, despite its prominent authors, was taken off the program after just four months. Lloyd Webber continues to research the topic and the Profumo affair, which could be more far-reaching than previously known.
