Pawel Rusinow Angelow (born September 17, 1991 ) is a Bulgarian luge athlete .

Juniors

Pawel Angelow made his debut at the Junior World Championships 2009 in Nagano at international championships and finished 32nd place, only the two Taiwanese placed behind him. Right in front of him came his compatriot Stanislaw Benjow , with whom he would often fight for Bulgarian starting places in the next few years, but who was also at times his doubles partner. The following year he was 36th in the single-seater in Igls and 17th in the double-seater with Benjow.

Men

Angelow made his men's debut in the 2011/12 season in the Biathlon World Cup . In St. Moritz he was able to qualify for the World Cup race for the first time and was 28th there. With further points gained in Nations Cup races, he was 11th overall with 31 points, with his doubles partner Kiril Kirilow with eleven points from Nations Cup races 35th and thus the last of the doubles World Cup ranking. 2012/13 failed Angelov to qualify for the World Cup, but he again underwent seven World Cup points over Nationencuprennen and was in the standings at the end with Anton Dukatsch and Rik Rozītis split 55. Still, he could in Whistler for the first time at World Championships participate . At the world championships in Canada, the Bulgarian took 36th place in the single-seater race and ninth in the separate U-23 classification. In the 2013/14 Olympic season Angelow again failed to qualify via the Nations Cup for the main World Cup races, with seven points again he was 55th, this time shared with Alexander Ferlazzo and Shiva Keshavan . Stanislaw Benjow had scored one point more and drove to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi .

Angelow at the finish at the national cup race in February 2015 in Altenberg

The post-Olympic season 2014/15 was far more successful for Angelow than any before. He was able to qualify for four of the nine World Cup races. First he was 26th in Lake Placid then 30th in Oberhof and 29th in Lillehammer . This was followed by the 2015 World Championships in Sigulda , where Angelow finished 31st. In Altenberg he finally finished 28th in the World Cup race. In the overall World Cup ranking, he finished 39th. The 2015/16 season was not that good . Angelow was only able to qualify for the World Cup races in Lake Placid, where he was 31st and in Calgary , where he was 30th, and benefited from the smaller number of European starters in these races. In the overall standings he was 43 with 46 points . He was also 34 at the 2016 World Championships at Königssee .

The 2016/17 season was even weaker, Angelow could not qualify for any of the main races in the World Cup, his points for the 47th place in the overall standings he only achieved through the Nations Cup races. At the European Championships in 2017 at Königssee he finished in 28th place, and at the 2017 World Championships in Igls he finished in 50th and last place after serious driving errors. In 2017/18 , Angelow did not qualify for the actual World Cup races in any Nations Cup races. A 22nd place in Lillehammer and thus a narrowly missed main race was the best result. Nevertheless, the 16 experienced points were enough for 46th place among 75 tobogganists. He also qualified for the Winter Olympics in 2018 of Pyeongchang . He drove three fairly even runs with no major mistakes. After the first run he was in 37th place, in the second run he drove the 36th time and in the third run he drove the 39th time. With that he was 37th after three runs and did not qualify for the fourth and final round of the best 20 and was also 37th in the final ranking.

Angelow at the start of the 2019 World Championships

The post-Olympic season 2018/19 went a little better again, but this was also due to the fact that the first season after the Olympic Games was used to rebuild athletes and many nations were less or not participating in the expensive World Cup after the efforts at the Olympic Games. Angelow was able to qualify once for the World Cup, in the difficult but comparatively weak race of Sigulda as 19th of the Nations Cup race. He finished the race 30th and in the overall ranking of the World Cup he was 39th with 37 points. He was also 30th at the 2019 World Championships in Winterberg . In 2019/20 Angelow only competed in four races, at the start of the season in Igls and in the three last race of the season in Germany. At the start he missed the main race as 26th of the Nations Cup as well as 23rd in Oberhof. Due to the adverse circumstances at the penultimate race in Winterberg, when the track was in poor condition due to the weather and the teams from Austria and the USA, but also the German doubles, did not start, the Bulgarian made it 18th without any problems the jump into the main race. There he crashed like two other starters and did not finish. With 11 points he was 49th in the overall ranking.
