Stephenson Island , also called Mahinepua Island , is an island off the east coast of the Northland region on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The approximately 2.26 km long and up to 1.1 km wide island is located around 4.5 km north of Whangaroa Harbor and is flanked at its northwestern tip by the much smaller Cone Island . The two islands are located on the seafront of Whangaroa Bay and administratively belong to the Far North District .

The highest elevation of the island is the hill called Ririwha , which measures a height of 132  m .

The island's coast is rocky, but there are also small bays with pebble beaches.

Owner of the island

The island belongs to the Māori tribe of the Ngā Uri o Whakakii .

Flora and fauna

Stephenson Island is home to a number of seabirds, particularly the petrel called petrel in New Zealand . Unfortunately, the Pacific rat called kiore and the brown rat , which is also called the Brown Rat or Norway Rat in English-speaking countries, also live on the island . Both species were introduced and pose a threat to the seabirds as they eat the birds' eggs and thus decimate their offspring. The Ririwha Restoration Trust has set itself the task of freeing the island from the rats.
