Stephenville is a small town ( town ) on St. George's Bay on Newfoundland's west coast.
The population was 6,623 in 2016. Five years earlier it was 6,719.
With schools, a hospital, shopping facilities and financial institutions, the city is the supply center for the southwest region of the island with a catchment area of around 45,000 people. Port Harmon , the city's port, was used for the export of their products until the end of the paper industry in 2005. The main administration of the region's higher education system is located in Stephenville.
The Stephenville International Airport went out from 1941 to 1966 operated US produced military airfield, which was responsible for the rapid growth of the city in the 1940s. While the space shuttle was in operation, Stephenville Airport was a potential emergency landing site in the event of an aborted take-off.
