Steppke ( Low German diminutive of stopper ) refers to a smart little boy in the Berlin dialect with positive connotations. It contains the typical diminutive ending "-ke", which can also be found in other Berlin expressions such as " Raffke ". As a salutation for a little boy or a goblin-like figure in the steppe game , the term was already used in the second half of the 19th century.

"Steppke" is also the German name of the comic figure "Flupke", invented by the Belgian illustrator Hergé , who appeared in the comic strip Quick et Flupke ( Stups und Steppke ) from 1930 .

Steppke is also the name of a gene that was discovered in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a key component of the insulin signaling pathway. The name was chosen because Drosophila mutants that carry a defective Steppke gene have a significantly reduced body size compared to wild types . Steppke belongs to the family of cytohesin proteins, which also exist in mammals and whose loss of function can lead to type II diabetes mellitus .
