Steppke was the brand name of a bicycle auxiliary engine in the GDR .
history
The Steppke was presented for the first time at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1953. It was the first large-scale auxiliary bicycle motor in the GDR . It was built from 1954 to 1956 by VEB Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Treptow and, with around 30,000 units, was the second most popular GDR add-on engine. With the advent of the Simson mopeds , the demand for such auxiliary motors decreased significantly, so that production at Steppke was stopped again. The motor was attached under the bottom bracket , which had a positive effect on the center of gravity and frame load. Compared to the MAW , however, the Steppke had a higher weight and lower performance. A red boy with a flat cap is shown on the logo of the tank, hence the name Steppke .
