The SR1 is a moped that was produced from 1955 to 1957 by VEB Fahrzeug- und Gerätewerk Simson in Suhl ( Thuringia ). The engine was built by VEB Büromaschinenwerk Rheinmetall in Sömmerda . The S stands for Suhl and the R for Rheinmetall. 152,000 SR1s were produced in two years.

history

The SR1 was built in 1955 as the first moped in the GDR and fulfilled the wishes of the GDR population for a moped, as it was popular in West Germany, especially from 1953. The SR1 was produced in large numbers and, together with the MAWs ("Maffs"), initiated mass motorization in the GDR. As a result of moped production, interest in auxiliary bicycle motors also fell sharply in the GDR. After the appearance of the SR1, sales difficulties arose when the “Maffs” were sold. At first there was uncertainty about driving license and insurance issues for this new vehicle class in the GDR. On March 1, 1956, a driver's license and insurance requirement was introduced for motorcycles and mopeds in general.

1956 saw some detail improvements, of which the fender covers were the most obvious changes. The SR1 was available with either steel or aluminum rims. It was mostly painted in the colors maroon or beige , furthermore in lime green , pike gray and diaphane blue. In 1957 the production of the SR1 was ended in favor of the further development SR2 .

Even the first Simson moped was a robust construction and enjoyed great popularity given the lack of competition. The top speed was 45 km / h and the range was around 250 km. The seating position and suspension comfort were more like a bicycle, as was the exterior, which is due to the large 26 "wheels, which were optionally available with steel or aluminum rims. In fact, the SR1 could also be ridden as a bicycle using the pedals pedaling to support the engine, for example on a mountain, is possible. To start the engine, a piece of the bike had to be ridden. With its dimensions and low weight, the SR1 was very handy The kickstand was not very durable. The factory specifications for fuel consumption were not entirely realistic, in everyday use the consumption was more than 2 l / 100 km. This high consumption in international comparison in connection with unfavorable combustion processes in the partial load range showed the engine of the SR1 as not optimal designed from.

In addition to various in-house constructions, the VEB Möve-Werk aimed to mass-produce a suitable child seat, which, however, was not initially implemented because the legal situation was unclear. Hobbyists even equipped the SR1 with a sidecar. The SR1 is the first Simson moped to be highly valued by collectors and is correspondingly expensive.

The electrical system consisted of a flywheel magneto 6 V, a headlight 6 V 15/15 W and a rear light 3 W.
