Simson S53
The Simson S53 is a two-seater moped from the manufacturer Simson from Suhl. It is the successor to the well-known Simson S51 .
The S53 is the last Mokick designed by Simson in the GDR . The difference to its predecessor, the Simson S51, is above all a more modern appearance, achieved through the more generous use of cladding parts made of plastic and new colors. Development work on a successor to the S51 began as early as 1984, but due to a lack of funds, it was ultimately necessary to limit oneself to minor changes, from which the S53 model emerged in 1990. The proven M541 two-stroke engine with four gears (with the exception of the moped version) has been further developed.
In September 1990 the S53 replaced the previously produced Simson S51 models. The press doubted that the rather timid modernizations would meet the demands of the new era. Ultimately, however, the S53 remained in the production program until the company's liquidation in 2002 and was one of the most successful models in the Simson range of the 1990s. The number of units was, however, orders of magnitude lower than that of the predecessor S51. In 1992, among other things, by reducing the exhaust timing in the cylinder by 10 °, it was adjusted to the top speed of 50 km / h that will apply from now on. The S53 has been modified many times over the years and also sold under other names such as "Habicht".
All Simson mopeds that had been sold in the former GDR until February 29, 1992 were allowed to have a top speed of 60 km / h. Most of the S53 already have the engine adapted to 50 km / h, as only a few S53 were produced in 1990/1991, at the end of 1991 production even came to a complete standstill and was only continued again in the course of 1992. In the Simson scene, the S53 mokick series ekes out a shadowy existence, not least because of the reduced top speed and the comparatively low production figures.
variants
S53 N
- No tachometer , drum brakes , aluminum spoked wheels, round lamp (no dashboard), turn signals, 12 V system, idle display in the speedometer, the BRD variant (from 1992) is specified with 50 km / h, but runs 60 km / h because the engine was not changed compared to the GDR variant.
S53 B 1991
- Drum brakes, metal spoked wheels, round lamp (no dashboard), turn signals, kick starter, 12 V system, idle display in the speedometer, no rev counter
S53 B from 1996 Habicht 50
- Drum brakes, without tachometer, indicators, kick starter, VAPE ignition
Fighter 50 from 1999
- 16-inch studded tires front and rear, no tachometer, drum brakes, indicators, enduro exhaust system, enduro mudguard
S53 CX from 1996 Habicht 50 S

S53 Alpha C from 1996 Habicht 50 S
- wider lamp mask, rubber-coated girder struts, black painted motor, side luggage rack, thicker handle behind the seat, rear light in the rump, disc brake, cast wheels, indicators, rev counter
S53 Beta from 1996 Sperber 50 Basic
- wider lamp mask, studded tires , front 19 inches, rear 17 inches, rubber-coated struts, longer main stand due to larger wheels, rev counter, Marzocchi fork, raised black stubby exhaust, additional plastic exhaust cover, rear light in the rump, plastic handguards, disc brake, indicators

- Special moped with a top speed of 25 km / h that can be driven by 15 year olds; three gears and rubber-coated girder struts, broad, thick handle behind the seat, rear light in the rump, plastic cover over the pillion passenger, no rear footrests
- Exemptions: turn signals, horn , not equipped with cranks, 35 W headlights.
