Simson SD50
The SD 50 is a cargo tricycle from Suhler Fahrzeugwerk GmbH , which was developed in 1992 on the basis of the SR 50 scooter and manufactured until 2002. It was marketed under different names (City-Trans, Trucky, delta), the most common being the name Albatros . Most recently it was sold as Altros .
construction
Despite great similarities in the front part of the vehicle, the SD50 also differed significantly from the SR50. Two stiffening plates were installed, the frame had a damping bushing on the front tube, the tank was additionally stiffened on the two screw mounts and the mount for the telescopic fork was different. From 1993 the optics of the SR50 Gamma with square headlights were taken over. Instead of the double seat bench and the rear wheel swing arm of the scooter, the SD 50 had a single seat and the load frame with the rear axle. Both rear wheels were driven directly by chain via a differential . The construction ensured a high level of driving safety even on poor roads. A parking brake and hazard warning lights were part of the basic equipment. The engine was the tried and tested Simson engine with a 4-speed manual transmission. In 2002 a Morini engine with automatic should also be offered . However, Simson's bankruptcy prevented series production. An electric starter was optional. A moped version was also offered. A windshield was available as an accessory. The selling price of 3200-3500 € (2002) was about twice as high as for an SR50 "Star Classic" at the time. The automatic version with an aluminum box should even cost 4380 €.
The SD 50 was designed as a transport vehicle for short-distance use and for catering establishments (e.g. pizza service). It was offered with different structures (box, loading area, removable transport box, special brackets). However, there was no sales success. It was not possible to fill the targeted market niche. Although the construction was robust and well-engineered, it was only of limited use. Compared to other load tricycles like the Ape , it is noticeable that the driver of the SD50 is exposed to the weather without protection. The possible transport capacity of an aluminum box (360 l) or a plastic tub (250 l) for a cargo tricycle is also quite low.
