The MS 50 Sperber is a sporty mokick from Simson . The model name Sperber is based on the earlier Simson Sperber , which also had an increased engine power. Because of the limited top speed of 50 km / h, the MS 50 Sparrowhawk is classified as a small motorcycle . In the S53 series , the name Sperber was also given to some models, but these differ significantly from the Sperber MS 50 discussed here.
The MS 50 Sperber was designed for demanding, sporty mokick drivers. It differs from the conventional S53 models mainly through a central spring strut, a sportier look with a modified cockpit and round headlights, and a 3.75 kW motor with a five-speed gearbox. Here, too, the basis for the engine was the basic type of the M541 , which was first used on the S51 in 1980 - the possible expansion of the transmission by a 5th gear was already considered in the design at that time and was now implemented with the MS 50 Sperber in 1997. The increase in performance was achieved through modified valve timing (inlet with central bar and larger outlet, single-ring piston). The maximum speed was throttled by means of a corresponding translation of the secondary drive and a coordinated exhaust. The vehicle was basically equipped with front disc brakes. Separate lubrication was optionally available. What is striking is the exposed chain, which was usually encapsulated at Simson in accordance with an MZ patent . Similar to the top equipment of the S51 series, the engine of the MS 50 Sperber was mostly painted black.
The new price of the MS 50 Sparrowhawk was 4025 DM (1998). The version with separate lubrication cost another DM 100 surcharge. Production ended in 2001. The market opportunities for small motorcycles made in Germany were generally poor in the 1990s. Although the vehicle was largely mature and offered a greater utility value than the S53 , it was not a sales success. Hardly more than 1,000 vehicles are likely to have been produced.
In brochures from 1999 a visually very different, fully faired version of the Sperber 50 Sport was presented, also equipped with the tried and tested Simson engine. The vehicle was probably not produced in series.
