Stern Pharmacy (St. Gallen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stern-Apotheke is the oldest pharmacy still in existence in St. Gallen .

history

The pharmacist Daniel Meyer and the doctor Kaspar Tobias Zollikofer founded a pharmacy together in 1803 in the “House of the Blue Sky” at Spisergasse 30 in St. Gallen. Later this was in sole possession of Meyers, who sold it to Rudolf Morel in 1859. However, it only remained in his hands for two years until it was taken over by Conrad Rehsteiner. He soon moved the pharmacy to the “Zum Sternen” building at Spisergasse 19. Since this move, the pharmacy has had its current name. Conrad Rehsteiner handed the pharmacy over to his son Hugo Rehsteiner, who later became a cantonal chemist, in 1895. In 1911 Robert Mario Alther, who had been trained by Rehsteiner, bought the pharmacy. Two years later this moved again, this time to the Art Nouveau building"Zum Burggraben", which was built ten years before this move on the foundations of the old city wall at the Spisertor. The pharmacy has remained in the family since it was taken over by Robert Mario Alther and is now run by the third generation of the Alther family. The house in which it is located is a listed building .
