Matt Cruse and his girlfriend Kate, who is engaged to someone else, are allowed to fly into space on Starclimber , a space elevator , on its first mission. There are two other astronauts on board. One is Matt's friend, whose name is Tobias Blanchard. A conceited test pilot (Chuck Shepherd) dies trying to mend the star cable that the Starclimber uses to climb into the sky. The cable breaks, however, and the Starclimber wanders through space without a course. When the captain loses consciousness, it is up to Matt, Tobias and the helpful Kate to bring the Starclimber back to Earth safely. Kate and her colleague SirHugh brought a copy of the aliens they discovered on board and it flies back to earth with them.
