Star coupler

The star coupler is a network component that brings together several lines, comparable to a hub .

Star couplers are used, for example, as central components for star-shaped glass fiber networks in order to couple a light signal into several glass fibers at the same time.

There are various methods of how a star coupler splits a light signal into a star shape over several fibers. One method is based on twisting and fusing several fibers. Another method uses a diffuse glass body that is mirrored on one end. The light signal is coupled in at one end, expanded in the diffuse glass, reflected on the other mirrored end and then decoupled into the other glass fibers. A third method uses a glass plate into which channels are diffused and through which the light is coupled in and out.

Star couplers also work on an electrical level. Telephone systems contain star couplers via which centrally generated audible tones are sent to several subscriber lines at the same time.
