Kiel observatory

The Kiel observatory is an observatory maintained by the Kiel University of Applied Sciences . It is located on the roof of the WiSo building (Sokratesplatz 2) on the campus in the Dietrichsdorf district of Kiel .

history

Astronomy was taught at Kiel University from around 1850, but the chair did not receive a university observatory until 1874. When the Altona observatory near Hamburg was closed in 1871 after the political shifts between Denmark and the Elbe Duchies, most of its instruments (a Repsold meridian circle and 3 refractors) as basic equipment to Kiel. With increasing air pollution, however, the observatory lost its importance; today all observations (around 20 nights per year) take place at ESO's southern observatories .

There was also a radio observatory in Kiel from 1952 to 1976 .

The first observatory at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences was built in the early 1960s on a building in Legienstrasse in Kiel. When the building was renovated in 1988 and the sheet metal dome had to be removed, the reconstruction failed due to an objection from a local resident.

As a result, a 4 m plastic observation dome was built on the roof of the high-rise for the economics and social affairs departments , in which the telescope is housed. The seminar room of the observatory is located below the dome. A working group consisting of students, employees of the University of Applied Sciences and an amateur astronomical association, the "Society for Folk Astronomy", was founded to provide support.

Public sky observations are carried out regularly at the observatory.

Instruments

The observation instrument is a Ritchey-Chrétien-Cassegrain telescope with a primary mirror diameter of 406 mm and a focal length of 3250 mm .
