The Neuenhaus observatory is part of the amateur astronomical association “Astronomischer Verein der Grafschaft Bentheim e. V. “(AVGB) operated facility in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Neuenhaus ( County of Bentheim ).

history

The AVGB was founded in 1990. In 2000 the association moved into premises in the city of Neuenhaus with the support of the Neuenhaus community. The Astronomical Association of Grafschaft Bentheim e. V. now had a lecture room with space for around 50 people, various exhibition rooms and an observation terrace . In 2005 one of the exhibition rooms was converted into a small planetarium , which was enlarged and modernized in 2016. In 2008, an observation dome with a diameter of 3.5 meters was opened on the terrace. The facility thus combines an observatory and a planetarium in one place.

Instruments

An 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is available in the observation dome . Pillars are available on the observation terrace to set up additional telescopes . In addition, the association has other telescopes such as a. two 12-inch Dobsonians, two 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes and various accessories for visual observation, astrophotography and spectroscopy.

planetarium

In 2016, the Astronomical Association of Grafschaft Bentheim e. V. a new planetarium. There is space for 35 people under a 5 m dome. The starry sky and celestial mechanical processes can be explained using modern projector technology. At the same time, fulldome programs are offered in the planetarium.

Educational work

The observatory and the Neuenhaus planetarium offer programs for the general public, schools, kindergartens and amateur astronomers. The programs are didactically and methodically adapted to the group and the age structure. In addition, the Neuenhaus observatory is available to kindergartens and schools as a contact for the conception and implementation of learning and teaching units and has established itself as an extracurricular learning location.

Practical Astronomical Saturday - PaS

Every third Saturday in October, the Astronomical Association of Grafschaft Bentheim e. V. to the amateur astronomical symposium Pas . Lectures, discussions and the exchange of experiences on a wide variety of astronomy and space travel topics are the focus of the event.
