The Welzheim observatory is located in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park in the Langenberg area, near the climatic health resort of Welzheim . It serves as a public observatory and observation station for the Carl Zeiss Planetarium in Stuttgart .

The observatory building including the west dome was built in 1991/92 by the city of Welzheim with the support of the Rems-Murr district. The state capital Stuttgart contributed the telescopes and technical equipment . On September 6, 1992, the Welzheim observatory was put into operation during a ceremony.

It is operated by the observer group of the Carl Zeiss Planetarium Stuttgart . On-site support and entertainment is provided by the Welzheimer Waldverein e. V.

On fixed dates (3 times a week), public star tours are offered when the weather is clear . Group tours of up to 30 people are also possible.

In the spring of 2017, the observatory was expanded to include a fourth, small dome.

The observatory can be reached via the road (L 1150) from Schorndorf to Welzheim. Before Welzheim, follow the signs “Sternwarte” at the junction to Langenberg. The “Sternwarte” car park is signposted. From here an approximately 500 m long dirt road leads to the observatory. This is not allowed to be driven on with motor vehicles, the headlights would disrupt the work in the observatory.
