The Central Locomotive Repair Workshop of the Hessian Ludwig Railway in Mainz was built before 1870. The striking group of buildings made of red sandstone blocks was located directly behind the fortress structures that surrounded the old town at that time .

The station of the Hessian Ludwig Railway in Mainz was at that time in the area of wooden gate until 1884 with laying of the railway line through the Central railway station was replaced, today's main railway station, the Neustadt limited southwest.

After the railway workshops were closed, the elongated halls with the characteristic iron - glass construction were partially demolished and their effect changed by an east facade. From 1929 to 1989 they served as a wholesale market hall . The city of Mainz then left it to the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM) , which set up the Museum of Ancient Shipping as an independent research area here in 1994 after extensive renovation .
