Steve Eckels

Steven Zdenek Eckels (born August 18, 1955 in New Mexico ) is an American guitarist and music teacher.

Eckels comes from a family of musicians with Czech roots. As a child he founded several bands and from the age of twelve had guitar lessons from Johnny Westbrook , a veteran of the Nashville music scene, who placed him in the professional Tommy Dameron Swing Orchestra . He received classical guitar lessons from Jesus Silva at the North Carolina School of the Arts .

In 1973 he went to Boston, where he worked with his brother as the guitar duo The Eckels Brothers . The duo performed in the eastern United States, Venezuela and England and released the jazz album Fresh Powder , for which Charlie Byrd wrote the liner notes. At the same time Eckels studied at the New England Conservatory (Bachelor 1978) and at the New England Conservatory (Master 1980).

In 1981 Eckels went to Wisconsin, where he ran a pottery with his father. As an author for Mel Bay Publications , he wrote eleven litter textbooks. He recorded the CD Woodland Winds with the Indian musician Frank Montano . After teaching at Berklee College of Music for a year, he went to Northland College as a guitar and vocal teacher in 1986 . From 1996 to 2000 he was a guitar teacher at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He became a columnist for Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine and published the book Mastering Fingerstyle Guitar with Alfred Publications in 1997 .

Eckels has been teaching guitar at Kalispell School District # 5 since 2000 . In the summers between 2001 and 2003 he attended master classes by Christopher Parkening , which resulted in his CD Sparks from the 7 Worlds - Classical Guitar Masterpieces .
