Steven Kovacs

Steven Kovacs (* after 1940 in Budapest ) is an American - Hungarian film producer and film director who was nominated in 1976 for an Oscar in the category "Best Documentary Short Film" .

biography

Steven Kovacs, who left his native Hungary in 1956, studied at Harvard University and graduated with a Masters and Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in history.

He first came into contact with film as a film historian and while writing his book From Enchantment to Rage: The Story of Surrealist Cinema ('From Enchantment to Rage. The History of Surrealist Cinema'). He taught at Stanford University , where he met Jon Else and Kristine Samuelson , with whom he co-produced the documentary Arthur and Lillie . In the film, Hollywood veteran Arthur Mayer and his wife Lillie look back on the beginnings of the film industry. The trio received a nomination for the 1976 Academy Awards .

Kovacs worked as a production manager for Roger Corman's production company New World Pictures from 1977 to 1979 . Kovacs produced, wrote the screenplay and / or directed a number of films, for example the action dramas Giants with Steely Fists (1978) with David Carradine and The Woman in Red (1979) with Pamela Sue Martin in the title role, as well as the comedic adventure film Up from the Depths (1979). Kovacs directed, wrote the screenplay and also produced the film drama '68 , which is about Zoltan Szabo and his family, who in 1968 worked hard to build a life in San Francisco from Hungary.

Kovacs has taught Creative Arts at San Francisco State University (SFSU) since 1990 . He writes reviews of works of art, films and political issues. Kovacs also writes both poetry and fictional works himself. His classes span a wide range of subjects, including the film sector, where he writes and directs scripts, works for American cinema and television as well as for European productions, and enjoys studying Latin America. He has also translated some of the greatest Hungarian writers into English.

From 2002 to 2003 he completed a Fulbright scholarship at the Hungarian Academy for Theater, Film and Television.
