The Steyr 40 tractor ( Steyr 40 a with all-wheel drive) from the Steyr Plus series by Steyr Daimler Puch was built from 1967 to 1970.

In 1966, the existing anniversary series with an orange round bonnet was gradually replaced by the new Steyr Plus series , with the Steyr 40 of this series replacing the Steyr 190 of the anniversary series in 1967. The water-cooled diesel engine of the type WD 307 with three cylinders and a displacement of 2.262 l had an output of around 28 kW (38 hp). The transmission had eight forward gears and six reverse gears, on request also up to 16 forward gears and 16 reverse gears. The maximum speed was given as 27 km / h.

The tractor was available as the Steyr 40 in the rear-wheel version and as the Steyr 40 a in an all-wheel version. There was also a root crop version with high wheels and particularly large ground clearance, which was called the Steyr 40 h. A cabin was available on request.

The body was designed by the French industrial designer Louis Lucien Lepoix .

The tractor was replaced in 1970 by the Steyr 540 , which, in addition to the type designation, mainly differed in the two HP more powerful engine.
