The new Plus series from Steyr was officially presented with the types Steyr 30 , Steyr 40 , Steyr 50 at the Vienna Fair in 1967 , whereby the "Plus" was supposed to convey the added value of technology and innovation. However, the smallest model of the Steyr 30 was already available a year earlier, the Steyr 70 and Steyr 90 followed a year later in 1968. The type designations initially corresponded to the DIN PS values . An "a" was added to the designation of the all-wheel drive versions.

The completely new, angular-looking body was designed by French industrial designer Louis Lucien Lepoix . The traditional green, red and orange colors of the so-called Steyr anniversary series with the round bonnets have been replaced by a uniform red and white. But there were also technical innovations, so engines with direct injection were used instead of, as in the past, with pre-chamber injection , which made the units more powerful and economical.

With the exception of the small Steyr 30, all-wheel drive was now offered as an alternative as standard. There were no longer single-cylinder models in this series, but the Steyr 86 from the anniversary series was still available until 1975. There were also root crop versions (e.g. Steyr 40 h) or narrow-gauge versions (e.g. Steyr 540 s).

For marketing reasons, the three-digit type designation was changed around 1970 and at the same time some changes were made, some of which also had an impact on the performance. The new types were now called Steyr 430 , Steyr 540 , Steyr 650 , Steyr 870 and Steyr 1090 .

Between 1971 and 1977 further models were added to the series to supplement the range of services. In 1971 the Steyr 1100 was introduced, which was now the new flagship. A year later, the Steyr 1200 exceeded the 100 hp mark. That year the Steyr 545 and Steyr 760 came onto the market, followed by the Steyr 980 in 1974 to round off the range.

With the Steyr 1400 , a new top model with 140 hp was introduced in 1974, which outwardly resembled the later models of the 80s series, such as the Steyr 8160 introduced in 1976 .

Finally, the models were expanded in 1977 with the Steyr 548 , Steyr 658 , Steyr 768 , Steyr 988 and Steyr 1108 .

A total of 108,713 units were sold, the models were then gradually replaced by the new Steyr series 80 . However, the Plus series models are still present and in daily use in Austria's agricultural and forestry sectors.
