The Steyr 540 is a tractor from the Steyr Plus series from Steyr Daimler Puch . It was built from 1971 to 1977.

In 1971, the existing Plus series with the types Steyr 30 , Steyr 40 , Steyr 50 , Steyr 70 and Steyr 90 was converted to three-digit type designations for marketing reasons and at the same time some changes were made, some of which also affected the performance. The new Steyr 540 therefore replaced the Steyr 40, which was two HP weaker.

The water-cooled diesel engine of the type with three cylinders WD 308.40 and 2.355 l capacity had a power of approximately 29 kW (40 hp). The transmission had eight forward gears and six reverse gears, on request also up to 16 forward gears and 16 reverse gears. The maximum speed was given as 27 km / h.

The tractor was available as the Steyr 540 in the rear-wheel version and as the Steyr 540 a in an all-wheel version. There was also a root crop version with high wheels and particularly large ground clearance, called the Steyr 540 h, and a Steyr 540 g, a grassland version with rear-wheel drive. In 1970 a narrow-gauge version was added as the Steyr 540 s. A cabin was available on request.

The body was designed by the French industrial designer Louis Lucien Lepoix .
