Lists on the subject

The Steyr IWS 2000 (short for Infantry Weapon System 2000 ) is the prototype of an anti-materiel rifle from Steyr Mannlicher .

history

Towards the end of the 1980s, Steyr-Mannlicher in Austria were considering a new type of weapon that would offer individual soldiers the opportunity to fight lightly and unarmored vehicles as well as radar systems or helicopters. Since the importance of sniper rifles in the 12.7 × 99 mm NATO caliber increased in importance in the USA and due to the fact that conventional rifles or machine guns could not fight most armored targets sufficiently successfully, Steyr began developing its own large-caliber sniper rifle . For this purpose, a new type of ammunition with a caliber of 14.5 × 207 mm was developed. The specialty of this cartridge is that it is an APFSDS bullet. The IWS 2000 was the first long gun to use this ammunition. In tests, the rifle turned out to be suitable for the intended task. A penetration force of 40 mm steel was achieved at 1000 m. Changes to the rifle and ammunition followed. The caliber has been increased to 15.2 × 169 mm. The development dealt mainly with the reduction of the weight as well as the construction of a five-section semi-automatic prototype. Possible developments could fully automatic variant with lower cadence of and the use of solid run include the testing of other types of ammunition.

ammunition

The 14.5 × 207 mm caliber used first was enlarged to 15.2 × 169 mm with later improvements to the rifle. The bullet weight is 35 g and includes a 20 g tungsten penetrator. The cartridge case is partly made of plastic. At 2000 m, it is possible to fight soft targets such as trucks or off-road vehicles.
