When particularly widespread in Spain Bull Run (also bull races or running of the bulls ) are bulls driven on public streets and squares, where the audience can participate.

Encierro

At Encierro , the goal of the run is usually the arena , where the bulls are then killed several hours later in a bullfight .

For this purpose, barricades are set up at the junctions of the side streets so that the bulls cannot deviate from the main route. The (human) participants in the bull run can step onto the street through narrow openings, drive the bulls or run in front of them and also get back to safety.

The most famous and internationally popular is the bull run on the occasion of Sanfermines in Pamplona , which arose in the Middle Ages from the butchery boys driving cattle to the cattle market. It also provided the template for the description of the bull run in Ernest Hemingway's novel Fiesta . In protest against this bull run, the animal rights organization PETA organized a naked run.

Opponents of the bull run criticize the fact that the animals at Encierro suffer great fear, panic and pain from blows, falls and the heated atmosphere.

The Pamplona cult label Kukuxumusu deals with the bull run. It was founded by young designers who were annoyed about the same postcards and souvenirs from the Sanfermines.

Since 1924, 15 people have been killed while running bulls in Pamplona .

Bous al Carrer

A form of bull run that is widespread in the south of Catalonia and in the Valencia region is the Bous al Carrer ("bulls on the street"). Single or multiple bulls are driven through streets and squares and the human participants run with them or can irritate them in the manner of a torero with a cloth or the like. Both young animals ( vaquillas or novillos ) and adult bulls are used. Along the route, there are often lattice sheds or platforms on squares, in or on which the participants and the public can seek protection.

In contrast to the encierro , the bulls are not killed later in a regular bullfight ( Corrida de Toros ), but are more often used by various Bous al Carrer .

These bull runs often lead to injuries and deaths. The bull Ratón (2000–2013) achieved negative fame, killing a total of three people and injuring several others in his career.

A particularly controversial variant is the bou embolat , which takes place in the dark and in which burning balls of fire are attached to the horns of the animal.
